Youth

Youth passed her by before she knew
Like a fluttering butterfly in flight
It tripped across the summer days
Climbed high as a mountain's height

A Starry eyed girl with lips so sweet
A flower fresh as the morning dew
She danced along as the little birds sing
Youth sparkled like stars as she grew

She played in the woods and cold, icy creek
Old weathered barns with musty smells of hay
Rode an old bicycle down every trail
Enjoying every moment of every given day

Oh the joys of swinging under that old maple
Or sledding down a hill in winter's snow
So many memories to last a life time
So many seeds she did sow

Here on the threshold of the years she stands
Looking back on another place and time
When a pretty, young girl with wind, blown hair
Ran barefoot, leaving her youth behind

  5. Susie,
Oh, this poem sounds like she has many sweet memories attached to her youth. I love the part about her riding her bike down the trails. I used to ride my bike all the time when I was younger, and it would take me everywhere. Loved your poem today, Susie.

  6. Oh, I forgot to say....I smiled when I saw this picture of the tire swing. When my kids were small, I used to go across the street from my mom's house to my aunts where she had a tire swing in her front yard. I would swing them on this tire swing often, and they loved it.

  7. Susie, you have such a talent for taking us back to our childhood days. I didn't have a bike when I was growing up, but learned to ride my cousin's bike. We played all over the hillsides and in the branches of water -- wouldn't trade those days for any that kids have now.

    Are you feeling better?

  9. Hi Susie, this poem was just breathtakingly beautiful. You really captured the feeling. I know sometimes I too like to think back to the days of my girlhood and remember, how it was to have that kind of energy. It is funny how it always the simple things that come back to mind. The taste of mom's fried chicken, the wonderful feeling of stepping out of the door in the morning to walk to school, with a whole day of possibilities awaiting. Sitting on the grass and taking apart a yellow dandelion and examining each and every petal, watching the ants as they worked or finding pictures in the clouds. Sigh. But thank goodness for the memories. You really make them come alive. I am so happy to hear that you are feeling better. Have a lovely afternoon! With Love,Delisa :)
