A Mother's Love

A candlestick flickered in the window
Like so many long nights before
She sat alone in her rocking chair
                                               Waiting, watching the door

So much time had passed, but yet
Each day and night the same
                                               A lonely mother's heart yearned
                                               Warmly, like the candlestick flame

For the son she loved so dearly
Had been gone forty some years
                                                No letter, nary a word
Not knowing, she shed many tears

So many miles and oceans apart
Some radiant spark gave her strength
Her body may have become old
A mother's love goes the length

The peace she patiently longed for
                                               She feared she'd never find
She lost it somewhere in Vietnam
A place where a mother's love is entwined

The rocking chair is now empty
                                               No candlestick can be found
Just the whistling of the wind
And leaves falling upon the ground

                                              @ Susie Swanson

  1. Oh so sad, Susie. Made me wonder how many times my mama sat and waited for me to come home, and now her chair is empty.

  5. Susie,
This poem was very touching. My mother-in-law spent many sleepless nights waiting for her son to return from Vietnam also. He did finally return home. Was this poem about your mother? 'A mother's love goes the length'.....I love that line.

    1. Thank you Sheri. No, but it relates to my mother and everyone else... My mother in law waited for her son, ( my hubby) to come home and he did.. She had two others that served at different times.. I wrote this from a Prompt that was posted to a Poetry page.I'm glad your mother in law's son returned. So many didn't.

  9. So beautiful and yet sad.. My mum is 95yrs old and I am traveling hundreds of miles to go and visit her next week.. I love her so, and I despair of the day she won't be here any longer.
I erased my other reply as I wrote mums age incorrectly. xx
