A Beautiful Home

It sits in the tall grass
                                                        So desolate and alone
                                                        No warmth does it feel
                                                        The chimney smoke is gone

                                                        A lonesome old place
                                                        The walls echoes with time
                                                        Taken back by its memories
In a past state of mind

                                                        Once a happy, old place
                                                        Filled with laughter and cheer
                                                        All the little children
                                                        It loved them so dear

Now it sits in the past
                                                        Listening to the wind
                                                        Some old creaking floors
With plenty of time to spend

                                                        The tall grass is green
                                                        The chimney smoke is gone
An old relic from the past
                                                        Is still a beautiful home

                                                        Susie Swanson,2013

What can I say, I love old houses and barns.. I never get tired of writing about them. They have so many stories to tell.... Hope ya'll have had a better week, (weather wise) than we have.. In one week's time we've went  from an Ice Storm to Spring like weather with Tornado Warnings and Straight Line winds to Winter Temps and four inches of Snow that fell yesterday. The sun came out today and it got up to near 50 and the snow's about gone. Next week it suppose to warm back up to Spring like weather.. Go figure. I really don't know what to expect next.. It's been a wild winter for sure.. I'll be glad when Spring finally arrives and Hopefully the weather will settle down.. But may be wishful thinking on my part.. Susie

  1. Love how you spin us right into a picture of beauty! Your writing captures me and takes me to where you are in the old house the barn where ever it is. Love to come visit ad read your prose. Thank you for sharing. Where do you find all those lovely old spots and buildings. I think I need to come east and visit those areas. :)
    Blessings

    1. Thank you so much Bethe.. I find them as I travel and they are in my mind.. I've wrote so many about old houses and barns that people probably think that's all I can write about but the past just keeps pulling me in.. I would love to visit your part of the world too..

  7. Susie,
I love this poem very much. It reminds me of our old homeplace. I guess you had a big snow at your home this weekend. It was pretty, but went quickly. I hope you are doing well.

  8. I love old log homesteads...I always wonder about the lives that called the walls home! Your poem captures that spirit:)

As for winter, I'd like to have one more good snow before Spring settles in...I've been wishing for a good storm all winter, and wouldn't you know that I left to see my daughters and grandson just before the recent snow! Such is life...

  10. Susie, There is an old farm house about a mile and a half away from here....it is slowing sinking down. Going to dust. It seems so sad. I swear it didn't seem so long ago that it was just a house needing paint. It's somewhat heart breaking to see a once loved place start to fall apart. My mom's old house was starting to fall into ruin, then ayoung couple bought it and have fixed it up a bit. That makes me happy. xoxo,Susie
