The Old Swimming Hole

An old familiar place comes to mind
deep as the water so cold
a place where summers were well spent
in that big, old swimming hole

The cow pasture path was worn bare
with feet scarcely hitting the ground
from late spring until early October
the old swimming hole we were bound

Covered by the shade of big maples
the sun was forbidden to shine
with plenty of shaking and shivering
and losing all track of time

Oh the splashing, playing and climbing
                                                we jumped from every limb
                                                that big, old swimming hole
                                                was surely a summertime gem

                                                Susie Swanson, 2012

I'm sure everyone can relate to this poem in one way or another.. We all remember a place like this where we could kick off our shoes and jump in on a hot summer's day.. Mine was an old pond we called The Maple Hole and you talk about cold, that water would freeze you to death .. It was surrounded by big maple trees and the sun never did shine through.. It didn't bother us at all, we were to busy playing to care how cold it was.. The whole community of kids gathered in on a hot day.  We never knew when to go home and sometimes we got ourselves into trouble for staying so long, with chores waiting on us at home.. What time we wasn't at The Maple Hole we were playing in the creek that ran adjacent to our house.. What fun times those were for  kids enjoying their summers.. I miss those days more now than ever before..Hope this brought back fond memories for you..
Just a quick update..My son and his new wife, made it back safely today.. Thank you all for your congrats.. May God Bless, Susie

  4. We still go to favorite swimming holes my home town is an hour away and so is the hubs one of our favorite things is to go to the swimming holes you hike into and it feels like you have stepped into a private Paradise. This poem was a wonderful reminder of those times, we weren't able to be swimming or in the sun this year but those old favorites will be waiting for us to visit next summer!
    have a great week :)

  5. This brought back childhood memories for me. No swimming hole just a bunch of barefoot kids playing softball in the middle of the street on a hot summer evening. Very nice poem!

  8. Ah yes! what a wonderful treat to be taken to the swimming hole after hoeing cane all day. And I remember Mama making me get out to warm up whenever I started shivering and my lips began turning blue. So much healthier than playing electronic games!

  10. Hi Susie! I loved your poem, how fun that must have been! I can just imagine. Growing up in the city we didn't have a natural swimming hole. We had a neighbor though, who had a beautiful swimming pool in her back yard and her teenage daughters would give swimming lessons in the summer. Or they would charge a small fee to come and swim in the afternoon and they would sell cookies, cokes and lemonade. It was a good way for the girls to make a little summer spending money and a fun way for all the kids to enjoy the pool. We all had a real good time and I will always remember that wonderful feeling of coming home after swimming, with all my muscles tired and relaxed, and how nice it felt to lay down on the couch next to my Mom, watch the afternoon soap opera General Hospital and fall asleep in her lap! Have a great day my friend! With Love, Delisa :)
